SJFB awards scholarships to local youth

The San Joaquin Farm Bureau recently announced the 2020 scholarship winners. Following are those receiving scholarships…

 

SJFB Federation Scholarship 

 

Mohrgan Fry is a graduating senior from Lodi High School. She will be attending California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo majoring in crop science and viticulture in preparation for a career as a PCA. Mohrgan was an active member in both Lodi FFA and in her 4-H Club. She was also a member of the Christen Club and played soccer for Lodi High serving as captain and the Galt/Surf competitive soccer teams.

Brittany Mogler has just completed her Freshman year at Brigham Young University in Idaho where she is studying agribusiness in preparation for a career in floral design. Brittany is a graduate of Tokay High School where she was an active member of FFA serving as vice president and competed for three years in the Floral Career Development Contest. In addition, she was active on the wrestling and cross-country teams.

Joseph “Weston” Petersen is a graduating senior from Lodi High School. He will be attending California State University, Fresno studying agribusiness in preparation for a career in vineyard/ranch management. Weston is an active member of Alpine Victor 4-H and Lodi FFA competing with the Farm Power team. He is also active in the First Baptist Youth Group. 

Austin Terra is a graduating senior from Escalon High School. He will be attending California State University, Chico studying ag science in preparation for a career as ag teacher/FFA advisor. Austin was an active member of the Escalon FFA serving as president and a National FFA Delegate. He was also a state officer candidate.

Elisabeth Watkins has just completed her Freshman year at University of Nevada, Reno where she is studying ag science in preparation for a career as an ag broadcaster. She is a graduate of Central Catholic where she was an active member of the FFA chapter serving in multiple positions including FFA Week Committee Chair. In high school she also participated in water polo, diving and cheerleading. She was also an active member of Linden-Peters 4-H Club serving as president and was awarded the National 4-H Council Youth in Action Healthy Living Award in 2019.

 

SJFB Agricultural Employee Scholarship 

 

Alyssa Donich is a graduating senior from Ripon High School. She will be attending Modesto Junior College studying Crop Science in preparation for a career in food safety. In high school, Alyssa was very active in FFA serving in multiple positions including vice president. She is also a recipient of the Greenhand, Chapter and State Degrees, respectfully. She was also an active member of her 4-H serving as vice president and junior swine leader.

Cameron Heinitz has just completed his freshman year at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo where he is studying wine and viticulture in preparation for a career as either a farm manager or winemaker. Cameron is a graduate of Tokay High School where he was an active member of FFA serving as president and earning his State Degree. Currently, he is a member of the Cal Poly Vines to Wine Club, Ag Leadership Society and captain of the intramural soccer team.

Caitlin Newport has just completed her freshman year at San Joaquin Delta College where she is studying agribusiness in preparation for a career in ag sales. Caitlin is a graduate of Lodi High School where she was active in FFA. She earned her State Degree and has applied for American Degree. She also was a member of the soccer and golf teams, continuing golf at Delta.

Roxanna Ramirez-Meza is a graduating senior from Aspire Ben Holt Prep Academy. She will be attending California State University, San Diego studying agribusiness in preparation for a career as an attorney. In high school, Roxanna as been an active member of Interact serving as co-president she also served as senior class treasurer on the Student Council and is co-founder of the MECHA club.

Gloria Rodriguez is a graduating senior from Escalon High School, she will be attending University of California, Davis where she will be studying biological science in preparation for a career as a physician assistant. In high school, Gloria was a member of FFA, Spanish and Key Club(s). She is an AP Scholar earning the Distinction Award her junior year and is currently under consideration for Stockton Pinnacle/Distinguished Award.

John Van Vliet has just completed his freshman year at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo studying BRAE in preparation for a career in ag engineering. John is a graduate from Ripon Christian High School where he was an active member of FFA serving in multiple positions including secretary. He was also a member of the soccer team.

 

San Joaquin Young Farmers & Ranchers

 

Mohrgan Fry also received a scholarship from the SJFB Foundation for Agricultural Education. Congratulations.

Elizabeth Merenda has just completed her sophomore year at Modesto Junior College and will be transferring to California State University, Fresno where she will be studying ag communications in preparation for a career as an ag teacher. Elizabeth is a graduate of Linden High School and was an active member of FFA earning her American Degree. At MJC, she was an active member of the Young Farmers & Ranchers and Animal Science Club.

Hannah Murphy has just completed her sophomore year at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo where she is studying ag communications in preparation for a career in ag marketing. Hannah is a graduate of Escalon High School where she was active in the FFA earning her Greenhand Degree and played on the volleyball team. Currently, Hannah is active in the Delta Gamma fraternity and the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow Club.

Matteo Ramirez is a graduating senior from St. Mary’s High School. He will be attending California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo where he will be studying agribusiness in preparation for a career in ag real estate or law. Matteo was an active member of the Environmental Awareness team in high school as well as a member of the cross-country, track and field and baseball teams. 

Austin Terra also received a scholarship from the SJFB Foundation for Agricultural Education. Congratulations.

Elisabeth Watkins also received a scholarship from the SJFB Foundation for Agricultural Education. Congratulations.

 

Alex Hildebrand Memorial Scholarship

 

Katelyn Struiksma is a graduating senior from Ripon Christian High School. She will be attending Oklahoma State University where she will be majoring in animal science in preparation for a career as a dairy nutritionist. Katelyn was an active member of the Ripon Christian FFA serving as treasurer and vice president of the dairy judging team. She was also active in golf and soccer.

 

American AgCredit Scholarship

 

Erik Weststeyn is a graduating senior from Ripon Christian High School. He will be attending California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo majoring in agricultural systems management in preparation for a career as an almond farmer and manager. In high school, Erik was a member of the Farm Power and Machinery team, Children’s Ministry, and a member of the football team.

 

Bruce & Barbara Mettler Memorial Scholarship

 

Wyatt Van Vliet is a graduating senior from Ripon Christina High School. He will be attending California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo majoring in plant science in preparation for a career as an almond farmer. In high school, Wyatt was an active member of  FFA earning his Greenhand and Chapter Degree. He also participated in the Farm Power and Machinery CDE team and was captain of the football team.

Ariel Vander Woude is a graduating senior from Ripon Christian High School. She was undecided on what college she will attend but will be studying animal science in preparation for a career as a calf nutritionist. In high school, Ariel was an active member of FFA earning her Chapter & State Degrees. She was also a member of the volleyball basketball and softball teams.

 

Gary Simas Memorial Agricultural Scholarship

 

Emily Cambra is a graduating senior from Central Catholic High School. She will be attending Modesto Junior College studying farm management in preparation for a career in ag business. In high school she was an active member of the FFA and involved in numerous nonprofits including Cambra’s Kids in which she is co-president and founding member. She was also a member of the golf team.

Alyssa Donich also received a scholarship from the SJFB Foundation for Agricultural Education. Congratulations.

 

Mike & Eleanor Gikas Memorial Scholarship

 

Helene Dondero is a graduating senior from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. She will be continuing her studies there in the fall as a graduate student majoring in ag education in preparation for a career as an ag teacher/FFA advisor. Helene is a graduate of Linden High School where she was an active member of FFA earning her State and American Degrees while also competing on the swim, basketball and golf teams. She has also been active member of the Linden-Peters 4-H serving in multiple positions, including president. While in college, Helene was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, Cal Poly Agricultural Leadership Society and a member of the Collegiate FFA Chapter.

Hector Nunez Lopez is a graduating senior from Franklin High School. He will be attending University of California, Davis where he is studying animal science in preparation for a career as a large animal veterinarian. In high school, Hector  was a member of the basketball team. Hector also volunteers his time feeding the homeless and with St. Edwards.

John Van Vliet also received a scholarship from the SJFB Foundation for Agricultural Education. Congratulations.

 

Raymond Camera Memorial Scholarship

 

Austin Terra also received scholarships from the SJFB Foundation for Agricultural Education and the San Joaquin County Young Farmers & Ranchers. Congratulations.

 

Robert J. Cabral Memorial Scholarships

Robert J. Cabral Memorial Educational Scholarship

Anne Asplund has just completed her freshman year at California State University, Chico where she is studying communication science and disorders in preparation for a career as an elementary speech teacher. Anne is a graduate of Lincoln High School where she was a member of the water polo team and a CAVE volunteer. In college she was a member of the Freshman Leadership Organization and was a CSU, Chico Honors College participant. 

Robert J. Cabral Memorial Junior College Scholarship

Alyssa Donich also received scholarship from the SJFB Foundation for Agricultural Education and the Gary Simas Memorial Scholarship. Congratulations.

 

Roy Mazzanti Memorial Agricultural Scholarship

 

Hector Nunez Lopez also received the Mike and Eleanor Gikas Memorial Scholarship. Congratulations.

 

The Clifford Dale Wunsch Memorial Scholarship

 

William Burden has just completed his freshman year at Modesto Junior College where he is studying animal science in preparation for a career in this field. He is a graduate of Sierra Manteca High School where he was an active member of FFA. He has also been involved in the Calla 4-H club serving as beef leader for the 2019-2020 year. Currently, he is a member of the MJC football team and their Young Farmers & Ranchers Club.

Hannah Cooley has just completed her sophomore year at San Joaquin Delta College and will be transferring to California State University, Stanislaus where she is studying ag business in preparation for a career as an USDA ag inspector or with the CDFA. Hannah is a graduate of Galt High School. She has been a member of GALEP for four years and participated in livestock showing for six years and judging for one.

 

Thelma Stewart Scholarship

 

Luke Burden is a graduating senior from Sierra Manteca High School. He will be attending Modesto Junior College studying ag science/engineering in preparation for a career in ag/civil engineering. Luke has been an active member of FFA earning his Greenhand and State Degrees. He has also been an active member of Calla 4-H Club serving as Treasurer and Junior Beef Leader. Luke has also been a member of the football team.

Makayla Kranich is a graduating senior from Tokay High School. She will be attending Modesto Junior College studying vet science in preparation for a career as a large animal veterinarian. Makayla has been an active member of FFA earning her Greenhand and Chapter Degrees. She also served on the Officer Team and the Vet Science CDE Team.
